Message from the NTA President:
To the Respected Educators of the NTA,
As we gear up to embark on another remarkable academic journey, I want to extend a heartfelt welcome to each and every one of you. As the President of the Nunavut Teachers’ Association, it is an honor to address the incredible individuals who are at the heart of shaping our future generations.
To our returning members welcome back for the 2023-2024 school year. I hope that you all had an excellent break and enjoyed your time off with family and friends. If you are a new local Inuit teacher starting out for the first time, I wish you luck and success for this school year. It is incredibly important for our students to see more Inuit teachers having success in the classroom and being role models for their students. I hope that this is the beginning of a long career in education for you. If you are a new teacher from outside of Nunavut, welcome to Nunavut and to the NTA. I hope that you have as good of an experience as I have had over my time in Nunavut, and that you come to love living and working here as much as I have.
Being a teacher is a calling that goes far beyond the classroom walls. It’s a commitment to fostering growth, instilling knowledge, and nurturing young minds. We all know the challenges that come with this noble profession – from adapting to changing curricula and handling diverse learning styles, to navigating the complexities of student needs and ever-evolving educational technology.
However, it’s essential to remember that the role of a teacher extends beyond the title itself. You are mentors, caregivers, motivators, and advocates. This year you will fulfil the role of mediator, nurse, therapist, referee, disciplinarian, coach, friend, and role model. Your influence reaches far beyond textbooks – you inspire dreams, build confidence, and provide a safe haven for students to grow and learn. Your dedication often goes unrecognized, but the impact you have is immeasurable. While it may go unnoticed, even to you, this year you will most certainly leave an impression on the students you teach that may alter their direction or path they were heading on.
As we stand on the threshold of the 2023-2024 school year, I want to express my profound admiration for your unwavering commitment to the students of Nunavut. Your resilience in the face of challenges, your creativity in finding solutions, and your genuine care for the well-being of your students are qualities that deserve our utmost respect.
Let this school year be a canvas where you paint a brighter future for our children. Your hard work, compassion, and determination will undoubtedly leave an indelible mark on their lives. Together, we can overcome any hurdles that may come our way.
I wish you all a year filled with successful breakthroughs, heartwarming moments, and the fulfillment that comes from shaping the minds of our future leaders. Thank you for being the pillars of education in Nunavut.
With great admiration and warm wishes, Justin Matchett
President, Nunavut Teachers’ Association
