Letter from the North Qikiqtani Regional President

All North Qikiqtani School Representatives and PI Liaisons attended the Nunavut wide training sessions in Iqaluit in September. The sessions were a tremendous success for the NTA. It was especially nice for me to put some faces to the names that I email on a regular basis. I would like to recognize Abdus Salam (SR) and Kendra Haines (PI) from Arctic Bay, Sheila White (SR and PI) from Grise Fiord, Meeka Inuksuk (SR) and Ron Ross (PI) from Hall Beach, Ian Marshall (SR) and Shontell MacInnis (PI), Jeremy Walker (SR) and Maren Vsetula (PI) from Igloolik, John Fanjoy (SR) and Donna Walters (PI), Oopah Arnakallak (SR) and Geebowah Arreak (PI) from Pond Inlet and Christine Manning (SR) and Jennifer Borden (PI) from Resolute Bay. Thank you all for your time and effort in keeping members informed of the issues at hand and in dealing with any problems that may arise.

Ian Marshall was named secretary treasurer for our region and quickly made his presence felt by producing our regional newsletter. Judy Malliki was responsible for the large job of translating. Thank you and welcome Ian!

I would like to take this opportunity to make our members aware of the NTA’s Curriculum Support Committee. I chaired the committee last year and it was agreed to build a teacher friendly lesson plan bank that would be easily accessible for all our members. As an association we are fortunate to have a group of people with different skills and experiences and it would be nice to share all of your great ideas. Last year, we built on the lesson plan template that was developed by previous Curriculum Development Committees. As chair again this year I am asking SR’s to post the lesson plan templates on your respective NTA boards and teachers to take the time to share your expertise. I apologize for the English only format. A translated template will soon follow. Completed lesson plans can be emailed to me (rstrutz@qikiqtani.edu.nu.ca) or faxed to me at 867-899-8875.
