President’s Christmas Message 2020
With many of our schools beginning their holiday closures this week, I want to take the opportunity to wish everyone a safe and relaxing Christmas break. This past year has been one of sacrifice for many of us, and being separated from loved ones during this season due to the pandemic is stressful. Through all the difficulties and hardship that has been brought on by COVID-19, you have persevered in being there for your students and have continued to provide learning opportunities and other supports. Our government and our communities owe you their gratitude. We will continue to fight for you and advocate for better services and understanding from our Employer. As we enter into Collective Bargaining later this school year, the Government of Nunavut needs to demonstrate the respect and consideration that you have earned.
Here at the NTA office, it has been a year of transition and change. We have had staff changes throughout the year, and have lost a close colleague and friend in Emile. I want to thank Shannon Hessian, Brian Barry, Patricia MacNeil, and Sonja Lonsdale for all of the support they have provided to me and to our members, and for their continued dedication and hard work through what has been some difficult times. I also want to thank Central Executive and our Regional Executives for their support and planning in guiding our Association this past year. Our Communication and PD Liaisons, you are the backbone of the NTA and we could not function without your volunteer work, thank you.
I also want to take this opportunity to inform members that I will not be running for re-election as President of the NTA in the upcoming February 2021 election. I will however not be traveling too far, as I have accepted the position of NTA Executive Director, beginning in July 2021. I want to thank the competition committee and Central Executive for trusting me in this position with these important duties, and will continue to strive to do my best to represent members’ interests and concerns in this new role. Thank you to everyone who has supported me as President for these past four years, it has been an honour to represent you. I am looking forward to working with your newly elected President and Executive next school year.
Have a Merry Christmas, stay safe and support each other during this unique Holiday season. There is light at the end of the tunnel and in unity and collegiality we will make it through this school year together.
